Align Miter Gauge to 90 Degrees
Align a miter gauge to 90 degrees and check the accuracy of your 45 degree positive stop using a dial indicator. This technique can also be applied to table saw sleds. See link below:

    I have a Delta DJ20, which, the G0490 is a direct clone of, to the point that I order parts for my jointer from Grizzly. It's a great machine. My only complaint is how clunky the fence adjustment is. But I rarely have to mess with it

    would it not be dangerous when you are picking your mallet, that your hand gets hit by a chisel closest to the mallet especially if you put one in the closest hole to the mallet.

Should there be any particular facet that doth cause you befuddlement, I beseech thee to voice such inquiries that I might offer elucidation. However, I must express that the manner of your address doth not conduce to the amiable discourse we are wont to encourage within this learned assembly.

    I followed your instructions and built an alignment tool. It helped me figure out where my low spot was and adjust things MUCH faster than my previous "tinker and test" method. But I found a new problem: you can have both tables be coplanar, and both be slanted downhill to the left. 😀 Now I need to figure out how to deal with that problem. 😂

      Zero a digital angle finder on the cutter-head and check that on the tables in the same orientation, adjust to zero :)

      Actually it dosn't matter, they can be slanted left or right as long as they are slanted the same.

    I just received a new Jet 8" HH jointer. I liked your idea but was somewhat skeptical. So I built one similar to yours. I used 3/4" plywood (8 plies) for the beam having the plywood plies aligned up/down, thinking this would make a reasonably solid beam. It takes quite a lot of end weight to support that long reach. I could not get the same readings twice for any particular spot (of the 4) and of the readings that I got .085 was the greatest. I suspect the weight was *bending* the table slightly as it was moved further / closer to the cutter head position and/or to the front/back of the table. I went to the straight edge method and discovered that the tables were pretty close to bang-on. To test my table *bending* theory, I put the beam/dial indicator near the end of a table and then leaned on the end of the table a bit. Wow, the dial indicator jumped a good bit. Methinks I'll stick with the straight edge method -- but I liked your creativity.

    Great video! I have several new Grizzly power tools, and the G0490X is one of them. I'm just getting my shop setup to start having fun with this new hobby. I tried setting up this unit using a straight edge, but didn't feel comfortable with that process. Your video has inspired to go through the entire setup again. Just waiting for my dial indicator to arrive.

    Another question if you don't mind. I have the Jet 8" Jointer which has knives. My jointer has two springs underneath the blade. Do you think I should remove the springs with your method? It looks like you kept the springs in place with your Powermatic which is probably similar to my Jet. Based on your video, it looks like you have springs too.

    • @GarageWoodworks
      @GarageWoodworks 6 месяцев назад

      Mine doesn’t use springs. The knives are held flush with the out-feed table using a magnetic jig. With the same magnetic jig, you could keep your springs in place - should not interfere.

  • @bpatters69
    @bpatters69 7 месяцев назад

    Great Video! Quick question thought. There are those who say it is best that the knives by slightly above the outfeed table. I have the jointer pal and dial indicator so I could follow your method to get the knives inline with the outfeed table and then lower the outfeed table slightly as my outfeed table can be adjusted. Your thoughts?

    • @GarageWoodworks
      @GarageWoodworks 7 месяцев назад

      Ive heard that too. I don’t see any need to have the knives higher than outfeed table.
